ULD (Unit Loading Device) sizes
 

The ULD is the container or pallet that most of the cargo on board the flights are loaded into and these containers comes in a lot of different sizes and specifications, depending on the type of aircraft it's used on, as well as special containers with for example safety doors or temperature regulation.

The specification of the ULD's dictates the size of the cargo that can be loaded, and the type of aircraft also dictates which type of ULD can be loaded onboard. Below is examples of a few common ULD's:

Freighter aircrafts

Freighter aircrafts or simply "freighters" are aircrafts that are built and equipped to carry only cargo onboard, with no space for passengers or luggage.

They come in a wide range of sizes and models, some of the more common are the modern long haul flights like Boeing 777 or the classic "jumbojet" Boeing 747, in some specification with possibility for nose opening, which simplifies loading of large and long pieces.

Longer packages are possible to load on the freighters, but may many times be subject to additional fees or higher pivot weights.

 

Passenger flights (PAX) – Wide-body aircraft

Most of the cargo flown around the world are actually loaded on regular passenger flights, in the belly hold (lower decks).

"Wide bodies" is a common name for larger type of aircrafts, typically accommodating two passenger aisles and is often used for long haul flights. They include but are not limited to the Boeing 777, 787, 747 or the Airbus 380 and 350.

The flights, just like the freighters come in all sizes and shapes, however, they have one thing in common. Even among the largest passenger flights the cargo door is only roughly 160 centimeters high.

This means that almost any cargo, independent of the length or width, cannot be flown on a passenger flight if the height exceeds 160 cm, it must then be flown of a freighter which many times are more expensive and less frequent.

Passenger flights (PAX) – Narrow-body aircraft

The "narrow bodies" passenger flights are smaller aircrafts mostly used for short haul flights like domestic or for example within Europe. They typically have one passenger aisle and their available cargo and baggage space is much less than that of the bigger wide bodies. The cargo compartment on these flights is severly reduced, and the type of cargo which can be accepted varies largely and it's not uncommon that these flights can not load packages thare higher than 85-110 cm, depending on the specific type of specification on the flight. Some of these flights also lacks loading equipment for ULD's so a max weight per package is often imposed in the range of 150 kgs perpackage
